A University of Alberta report says Albertans work longer hours and spend less time with their families than anyone else in Canada.

The report, done by the university's Parkland Institute, cites numbers from the Government of Canada’s Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.

Albertans, according to the numbers, have an average of five hours of leisure time per day, compared to the national average of 5.55 hours per day.

On an annual scale, that means Albertans have 182 hours less of leisure time than the average Canadian.

Though Alberta was the first province to observe Family Day, starting in 1990, Parkland research director Diana Gibson said having a statutory holiday named after families is not enough.

“We’re hoping that Albertans, and their government, will take pause this Family Day and reflect on policies needed to properly support Alberta’s families and communities in the long term,” said Gibson in the release.

In Calgary, about 100 people were soaking up the warm weather and fresh snowfall at Olympic Plaza for the Winterfest snowman building contest.

And in Edmonton, hundreds of parents and children took advantage of the warm weather to shuffling around on skates and going down snow slides in William Hawrelak Park for the final day of the annual Silver Skate Festival.
