A 25-year-old woman has been charged in connection with an accident that killed an elderly pedestrian last month in southwest Calgary.

Valentina Grove, 79, died from her injuries one day after she was struck by a car while crossing the intersection of Bow Trail at 37th Street S.W. on the morning of Jan. 7.

Witnesses said the woman was crossing during a walk signal. But bright sun directly behind her might have prevented the driver — who was turning left onto eastbound Bow Trail — from seeing the pedestrian, police said.

The driver of the Honda Civic has now been charged under the Traffic Safety Act with driving without due care and attention and failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Alcohol, drugs and speed were not factors, police said.
