A sudden burst of winter weather in Calgary created bad driving conditions Tuesday morning, leading to a couple of major accidents on Deerfoot Trail.

A man is in serious condition after being hit by a car on Deerfoot Trail between McKnight Boulevard and 32nd Avenue N.E. in the southbound lanes just before 6:30 a.m.

As many as six vehicles may have been involved in the crash. Police say the man was struck after leaving his car.

Drivers were being asked to avoid the route by getting off Deerfoot Trail before McKnight Boulevard during the morning rush.

Also on Deerfoot Trail, a tractor trailer jack-knifed across several lanes at 16th Avenue N.E. That accident shut down all but one lane, police said.

From midnight to 9 a.m. on Tuesday there were 42 non-injury collisions and 7 injury crashes reported to police, officials said.
