A home on the southeast edge of Calgary was destroyed by fire on Sunday night.

Fire crews were called to the two-storey house at 17th Avenue and 92nd Street S.E. at around 6:30 p.m.

Firefighters began fighting the blaze but quickly withdrew when they realized the floor had been compromised.

"The floor was on fire and you have to get crews out of there, because it's structurally unsound then and the floor can cave in, so we were unable to do a primary search,” said acting Battalion Chief Bob Akins.

It’s believed no one was in the building and there were no injuries, officials said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

House involved in another investigation

An 18-year-old man faces a number of charges after a stolen vehicle was stopped on Feb. 9 at the home on 92nd Street southeast, which was later destroyed by fire.

Police also found a second stolen car on the property, and returned on Feb. 10 to search the house before it burned to the ground on Feb. 12.

"It is an unusual circumstance," Staff Sgt. Geoff Gawlinski said, but added police have no reason to believe there are any ties to organized crime at this time.

The man is facing two counts of shop break and enter, two counts of failing to comply, one count of theft over $5,000, one count of driving an uninsured motor vehicle on a highway, one count of property damage and one count of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He is expected to appear in court on Feb. 22.
