A fire on the Tsuu T'ina reserve at the southwest edge of Calgary is sending smoke across the southeast part of the city. (Monty Kruger/CBC)Smoke from a fire at a dump on the Tsuu T’ina reserve southwest of Calgary is wafting across several city communities Wednesday morning.
The smoke is moving east and the communities of Somerset, Evergreen and Bridlewood are primarily affected, the city said.
The Calgary Fire Department has been getting many calls reporting heavy smoke over the southeast part of the city, officials said. The fire is outside the city’s jurisdiction and Calgary fire crews have not been asked to help fight it.
Fire officials are measuring air quality in the affected areas with support from Alberta Environment. The data will be passed on to Alberta Health Services (AHS) officials, the city said.
AHS has issued a precautionary fire smoke advisory for the Calgary area.
"Although minor smoke conditions do not typically cause health concerns in most healthy individuals, if smoke conditions become more severe, even healthy individuals may experience irritation of eyes, throat and possibly shortness of breath," stated the advisory.
Those with respiratory and heart conditions, such as asthma and congestive heart failure, may be more likely to notice a worsening of their symptoms.
AHS recommends that those experiencing symptoms call Health Link at 403-943-LINK.
