Former health board chair looks to run in Calgary-West

The man who supervised massive changes to Alberta's healthcare system now wants to get into provincial politics.
Former Alberta Health Services (AHS) head Ken Hughes confirmed rumours Tuesday that he'll try for the Progressive Conservative nomination in the Calgary-West riding.
Hughes, a former Member of Parliament, will square off against former police officer Mike Ellis.
The seat is currently held by Finance Minister Ron Liepert, who is not running for re-election.
Hughes chaired the "superboard" that replaced regional health boards in 2008. He says healthcare now has stable funding and accountability, despite accusations of long waits for patients and intimidation of doctors who criticized government policy.
“If you look at where Alberta Health Services has come from, from the day when I was asked as a citizen, an ordinary citizen, a business person, to step in and take the leadership ... we've come immeasurable distances.”
Ken Hughes says he's ready to help build an Alberta that is an international leader in "economic performance and environmental stewardship."
Hughes stepped down as chair of the AHS board last week. A provincial election is expected in the spring.
