Dozens of protesters held up signs and chanted slogans outside of the posh Calgary hotel where former U.S. vice-president Dick Cheney was to speak at a $500-a-plate dinner speech.
A cluster of police officers on bikes looked on as demonstrators urged them to arrest Cheney.
"Detain Dick!" the crowd chanted as cars along a busy downtown thoroughfare honked their horns.
Many signs labelled Cheney a war criminal and a torturer for the interrogation techniques the U.S. government has employed since 9-11.
Protesters also called on Canada to end its mission in Libya and leave NATO.
Kate Dyson of Edmonton says it's up to her and her fellow protesters to draw attention to Cheney's record, since Canadian authorities haven't done anything.
