A worker who was hurt when this retaining wall collapsed on Monday could have been much more seriously injured, a fire official says. CBCA worker at a residential construction site in southwest Calgary is lucky he wasn't more seriously hurt when a retaining wall collapsed on Monday morning, fire officials say.

The 1.2-metre high barrier fell into the lot where workers were putting in a foundation for a new house in the 2200-block of 28th Avenue S.W.

One worker was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

"The fellow's very lucky that he wasn't trapped underneath that," said Calgary Fire Department Battalion Chief Larry Fisher.

It's not yet known what caused the 18-metre long wall to come down, he said.

"But we do know that there has been a great deal of rain this summer."

Occupational Health and Safety officials have temporarily shut the site down.
