WCB often violates privacy rules, consultant says

A consultant who deals with injured workers says the Workers' Compensation Board often violates the privacy rights of its clients.
Alberta's privacy commissioner ruled this week that the board had contravened privacy rules by disclosing a worker's personal information to a doctor.
Gail Cumming, a private consultant who advocates on behalf of injured workers, says privacy violations are frequent.
"So I have circumstances where they've violated FOIP [Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act], I've brought it to their attention, they've indicated it's a 'whoops'. And only WCB is allowed to have a 'whoops' when it comes to FOIP."
Part of the problem is inadequate training for WCB staff, Cumming said.
Officials from the WCB were not available to comment.
