Alberta RCMP investigators have arrested a man in connection with the murder of a woman found near Olds, Alta., last month.
Following an investigation that involved 30 police investigators and more than 4,000 man hours, a warrant was issued this week for the arrest of a 29-year-old suspect, Bashir Gaashaan, of no fixed address.
Three Alberta Mounties travelled to Thunder Bay, Ont., to arrest Gaashaan and take him back to Red Deer to answer to several charges on Monday. Gaashaan also had additional outstanding warrants.
He is charged with one count each of first-degree murder, unlawful confinement, offering an indignity to human remains, sexual assault and trafficking in cocaine.
The body of Jenna Cartwright, 21 and of Red Deer, was discovered May 3 near a roadway in Olds. The death was ruled a murder by Calgary coroners, although the cause of death has not been released.
Gaashaan has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in Red Deer Provincial Court on June 29.
Police continue to investigate the case, and have asked the public to assist with possible tips. Anonymous callers can also contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
