It's been under wraps for nearly a year, but on Thursday CBC News finally got a sneak peak of the new home of the Calgary Farmers' Market.

The market won't provide an exact date, but word is they will be reopening at the new location at 510 77th Ave. S.E. at some point in mid-April.

It's still under construction, but all that's left are the finishing touches.

"We'll never be able to replicate the old Currie Barracks facility, but we've tried to bring the ambiance and the feel here," said Ken Aylesworth, general manager of the market.

When the market opens, there will be more than 100 vendors to choose from. The majority will be familiar favourites, but there will be some new vendors, as well.

"What you are going to see is about 20 per cent of our vendors are all brand new, so all new products, new concepts which I think is a wonderful part of what's here," said Aylesworth.

There's going to be a lot more space, which means a bigger food court, children's play area, and bigger booths for vendors.

That's welcome news to Mick Sherlock.

He's excited to have more space for products and customers at his shop, Missing Link Extraordinary Sausage.

"We do 50 types of chicken sausage and we like to make them as interesting as possible," Sherlock said Thursday at the under-construction market.

He's been waiting patiently to get back to work since the other location closed in December.

It was supposed to reopen at Blackfoot Trail and Heritage Drive in February, but there have been delays because of construction slowdowns.

"The vendors have definitely encountered some hardship in that they haven't had cashflow over the last couple of months because of the delayed timeline, but they've been amazing," Aylesworth said. "We've not left anybody behind. We've made sure that anybody who's had troubles, that we've worked with them."

"The challenge is really getting re-established," Sherlock said. "People are excited and waiting for us to open. We have lost a little bit of momentum, but I think that will change really quickly."

For new vendors, it's a chance to be part of a Calgary tradition.

CBC "Awesome clientele, always busy and I'm just looking forward to serving the customers at the Calgary Farmers' Market," said Drew deVries, manager of Fratello Analog Cafe.

While it has taken some time for the new location to open, vendors say it's worth it.

"All the quality of the vendors have stepped it up ... and booths are much nicer. It's going to be a great atmosphere for the customer," said Barry Holmes of Sweet Spot Donut Shop.

"I can't wait to get in," said Sherlock. "I'm just waiting for the first day they open the door. It's going to be like the Macy's sale. Everybody is going to run in, we hope."
