About 1 a.m. Saturday, police responded to complaints about gunshots in the area of Third Street West and Third Avenue Southwest.
They found a man in his 30s in the street and another man in a nearby vehicle. The men were taken to hospital, where one was declared dead. The other is in stable condition.
Police are seeking a third person in connection with the incident.
Edmonton and Toronto police also reported the first killings of 2011 on Saturday.
