New charges against Dustin Paxton were revealed Thursday. He has already been charged with an assault the victim's family describes as "torture." (Regina Police Service) More charges have been filed against Dustin Paxton, the man who allegedly tortured his Calgary roommate over a period of more than four months.
The revelation was made in a Calgary courtroom Thursday, as lawyers prepared for a preliminary inquiry and sorted out witness testimony.
Paxton was already facing two counts of aggravated assault and one count of forcible confinement against 26-year-old Dustin LaFortune.
That case stems from a long-running series of attacks in Calgary and Regina that left LaFortune disfigured and emaciated. He was dumped at a Regina hospital by an unidentified man in April with injuries his family believes were the result of torture.
Paxton, 30, was also charged in September with the forcible confinement and aggravated assault of a Calgary girl.
Crown prosecutor Joe Mercier has now confirmed that Paxton is also facing a charge of assault with a weapon against another man relating to an incident in May 2009.
Charges of fraudulently impersonating an individual, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possessing break-in instruments have also been laid.
Dustin LaFortune, 26, is continuing his rehabilitation in Victoria after his roommate allegedly assaulted him over a period of more than four months. (CBC) Mercier said charges involving a fourth individual are pending.
Paxton didn't appear in court Thursday.
A preliminary inquiry on the charges against Paxton has been set for Jan. 26-31. Twenty-one witnesses are expected to appear.
Preliminary inquiries are held to determine if the Crown has enough evidence to justify a trial.
