Dustin Paxton, 30, is mentally fit to stand trial for the brutal assault on his former roommate in Calgary and Regina. (Regina Police Service)A man accused of brutally assaulting his former roommate over several months is fit to stand trial, a psychiatrist told a Calgary judge Monday.

Dustin Paxton, 30, is facing two counts of aggravated assault and one count of forcible confinement in connection with the attacks that left Dustin LaFortune, 26, emaciated and disfigured.

After evaluating Paxton's mental health since early September, psychiatrist Dr. Kenneth Hashman told provincial court Judge Eugene Creighton the former Regina man is competent to face a trial. No details were released about the mental assessment.

Paxton, being held at the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Centre, had been ordered in September to undergo a 30-day assessment. In October, Hashman was granted another month to finish observing Paxton.

Paxton is alleged to have assaulted LaFortune in Calgary between Dec. 1, 2008, and March 2, 2010, and again in Regina between March 15 and April 16.

On that day, someone left LaFortune at a Regina hospital with injuries his family has said were the result of torture.

Paxton was arrested in Edmonton in August and taken to Calgary.

In September, Paxton was also charged with the forcible confinement and aggravated assault of a Calgary girl.

Paxton has elected to be tried by judge and jury. The case is now set to move to the Court of Queen's Bench for a preliminary hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to proceed, Crown lawyer Joe Mercier said.

Paxton's lawyer Jim Lutz said he expects that more charges related to another incident will be announced later this week.
