There were a couple of hotly contested races and one upset win for school trustee positions as Calgarians went to the polls Monday night.

Wards 11 and 12 separate school trustee Micheal Annuik was defeated by challenger Cathie Williams in a race that stretched late into the night.

Williams won with 42 per cent of the vote, compared with Annuik's 27 per cent, a third-place showing.

George Lane, the incumbent trustee for Wards 6 and 7 in the public system, finished just one percentage point ahead of his challenger, Carole Oliver.

When all 60 polling stations had counted their ballots, Oliver had 14,342 votes and Lane had 14,575.

In the contest for public trustee in Wards 8 and 9, school board chair Pat Cochrane held on to her seat with a 52 per cent to 48 per cent victory over Laura Shutiak, a former Calgary Herald reporter.
