Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach was weighing in Tuesday after one of his caucus members made a negative comment — and later apologized for it — about Calgary's choice of mayor-elect Naheed Nenshi.

Calgary-North Hill Conservative MLA Kyle Fawcett posted a statement on Twitter Monday night saying the city's voters had made a big mistake.

Fawcett later credited Nenshi with running a great campaign, but added the new mayor was not one of his top five choices for the job.

Stelmach said such statements are not welcome.

"I'm sure this morning Kyle's remorseful. That just shows the power of Twitter. But we always have to respect the wishes of the electorate, because that's what democracy's all about," Stelmach said.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Fawcett said: "Upon reflection and discussion with my colleagues, including the premier this morning, I apologize to the new mayor and his supporters, some of whom I personally know and who have worked so hard to make our city a better place."

Fawcett added that Nenshi ran a great campaign, and that the voters are always right in their choice.

"While I supported a different candidate, and Mr. Nenshi and myself might disagree on some policy matters, it was not my intent to question the democratic result of the election," Fawcett said.

Stelmach said he spoke with Nenshi shortly after he was declared the winner, adding that he is looking forward to working with him.
