A concrete block was thrown through the front window of a Calgary mayoral candidate's campaign office over the weekend in what he says could be an anti-Muslim attack.

The vandalism discovered Sunday at Naheed Nenshi's headquarters in the 600 block of 16th Avenue N.E. follows the recent destruction of several of the candidate's campaign signs, he said.

"I've received a couple of emails suggesting people should be afraid of having a Muslim mayor," Nenshi said, adding that the vandalism coincided with the Muslim celebration marking the end of Ramadan and the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

"There was a little bit of evidence, kind of xenophobic comments on the website and in emails over the last couple of days. So I prefer to believe that this is not a pattern. But that possibility does exist," Nenshi said.

Police are investigating the incidents, he said.

The municipal election is on Oct. 18.
