(CBC)Months before assault victim Dustin LaFortune showed up at a Regina hospital disfigured and emaciated, someone in Calgary made a seven-minute 911 call related to the case that was never acted on, officials confirmed Wednesday.

The person who placed the Feb. 28 call expressed concern about the well-being of LaFortune, officials said without revealing any further details.

No officers were dispatched to investigate after the call, said Ronda Bendiak, acting manager of Calgary's Public Safety Communications (PSC ) centre, which handles 911 calls in the city.

On April 16, LaFortune, 26, whose family had reported him missing, was left at a Regina hospital by an unidentified man. He was covered in burns and stab marks, and missing part of his bottom lip and tongue, injuries his family believes were the result of torture.

The PSC centre has now launched an internal investigation into how the February call was treated, Bendiak said.

The caller's identity is not known, and police are asking for members of the public with information to come forward, officials said.

LaFortune's former roommate Dustin Ward Paxton, 30, was arrested last week in Edmonton and transferred to Calgary, where the investigation into the case is being handled.

Dustin Ward Paxton, 30, who is accused of brutally assaulting LaFortune, appeared in court in Calgary on Aug. 27. (Regina Police Service)He has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of forcible confinement in connection with a series of attacks on LaFortune.

Police believe LaFortune, originally from Winnipeg, was assaulted in Calgary between Dec. 1, 2008, and March 2, 2010, and again in Regina between March 15 and April 16.

Calgary police became aware of the February 911 call through the course of their investigation late last week, officials said.

The internal review at Calgary's 911 call centre comes two months after a string of delayed or misdirected emergency responses prompted officials to staff the centre with additional police officers.

Paxton made his first court appearance on Friday via video link from the Calgary Remand Centre.

LaFortune, who has been undergoing rehabilitation at the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre in Regina, moved to Victoria on Monday to continue his recovery at his mother's home.
