Investigators interview neighbours after a fatal police shooting outside a home in Okotoks, Alta., early Sunday. (Jennifer Lee/CBC)An Okotoks, Alta., man was shot and killed during an armed standoff with police in the town south of Calgary on Saturday night.
Police have not released the man's name, but Ralph Wilson, deputy mayor of Okotoks, said he was the husband of a town councillor.
Wilson said he didn't know Coun. Naydene Lewis's husband, Corey, well but confirmed he was the victim.
Police were responding to a domestic dispute at around 7:30 p.m. MT in Okotoks, about 40 kilometres south of Calgary. A man had allegedly struck a teenager.
When officers arrived, they were confronted by a man holding a shotgun. Mounties say he refused to put the weapon down and he threatened the officers.
The man did not respond to efforts to communicate with him after the RCMP's emergency response team was called in.
The standoff continued until 2 a.m. Sunday, when the man suddenly walked out of the home carrying what police say appeared to be a firearm.
He was shot by an emergency response officer and later died in a Calgary hospital.
Police have not said whether anyone else was in the home at the time of the standoff.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, a police oversight agency that has jurisdiction over all sworn police officers in the province, is investigating.
