(CBC)The long list of candidates vying for the mayor's chair has another name on it with the former head of the Calgary Homeless Foundation announcing his bid Tuesday.

Wayne Stewart made it official at an event at the Lougheed House on 13th Avenue S.W., promising he would push for the appointment of an independent auditor to review the way the city buys goods and services.

"We need to renew faith that our civic government is getting maximum value from our tax dollars and is prepared to do what is right for the city and its people, today and for the future," he said.

"Calgary is a great city, but we cannot rest on our laurels; we must move forward or we'll fall behind," said Stewart, who also wants Calgary to make a bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Last summer Stewart was appointed by the provincial government to head the Alberta Secretariat for Action on Homelessness, which is committed to ending homelessness by 2019. He left that position in April.

In the 1997 provincial election Stewart ran and lost under the Liberal banner in the Calgary-Glenmore riding.

The retired Shell Canada executive is the ninth candidate in the race to succeed Dave Bronconnier, who said in February he will not run again.

  • Paul Hughes, past president of the Calgary Food Policy Council.
