The lawyer for the owner of a Canmore, Alta. daycare warns that assault allegations against the caregiver have not been proven.

Susan Lee Preece, who co-owns the Dragonfly Daycare with her husband, has been charged with six counts of assault on children at the licenced centre.

The six kids all under the age of three did not require medical attention, said the RCMP.

The charges are damaging to his client's reputation in the small community about 100 kilometres west of Calgary, said Dale Fedorchuk, Preece's lawyer.

"My concern is if these allegations are completely unfounded, the detrimental effect on the daycare and the people involved, the harm that could be caused to both the business and the community may be substantial, and without proof, that harm could be for nothing," he told CBC News on Friday.

The Dragonfly Daycare, which is still open, started two years ago and has space for 80 children. Cherri Hodgins, who runs the Canmore Community daycare, said the charges are worrisome.

"It is important to remember these are just allegations and nothing has been proven but it does damage in the community in regards that it's unsettling," said Hodgins. "It's unsettling for parents, for the caregivers that work really hard every day with the children."

Preece is not allowed to go to her daycare or have any contact with the alleged victims. She's scheduled to appear in Canmore provincial court on May 12.

A publication ban is in place prohibiting the release of the names of the children.
