A four-year-girl's condition has been upgraded since being hit by a van Wednesday afternoon as she was dashing across a southeast Calgary street.

Police say she was struck by a van near the intersection of 19th Avenue and 39th Street S.E. just after 4 p.m. MT as she ran out to try and catch up with her two older brothers.

"The two brothers had already crossed on the north side of the roadway and the four-year-old girl came out of an alley just behind two pick-up trucks," said Sgt. Joerg Gottschling.

Police blocked off traffic and escorted the ambulance carrying the girl to the Alberta Children's Hospital in life-threatening condition, but was upgraded to serious but stable condition on Wednesday.

"Fortunately I just received word back from the Children's Hospital that she is going to make a recovery," said Gottschling.

The driver of the van was travelling within the 50 km/h speed limit and is not facing any charges, police said. "From what witnesses told us she did dart in front. In that sense I don't necessarily think the driver of the van could have stopped in time," said Gottschling.
