A Calgary taxi company operating Toyota Prius hybrids says it will order more of the fuel-efficient vehicles once a braking problem has been resolved.

But for the moment Associated Cabs Ltd. is waiting before ordering more of the cars.

Toyota announced last Tuesday it is recalling about 437,000 Prius and other hybrid cars worldwide to fix problems with the antilock braking system.

In Canada, roughly 3,300 Priuses fall under the recall and letters were being mailed to all owners of the 2010 Prius hybrid cars.

Associated Cabs was the first taxi company in Alberta to use the Prius. Company president Roger Richard said Associated has four Priuses on the streets and they — like other hybrids in the fleet such as the Ford Escape — use half as much fuel as conventional cabs.

Richard said he has put an order for more Toyotas temporarily on hold.

"Once they fix that problem, which I have no doubt they will, I will have no hesitation in using that product," said Richard, adding that the company is also purchasing more Escape hybrids.
