The family of a slain Calgary girl says the days since her death have been full of "unimaginable pain for anybody to have to cope with."

In a statement released Saturday, Brittney Nora McInnes's family said the high school senior was planning her first trip to see the Pacific Ocean and was considering becoming a veterinarian.

The family said their well-balanced, happy household has been torn apart by the death of the 17-year-old, whose body was found stuffed in a box spring in her southwest Calgary home on Monday. No cause of death has been announced.

The family statement said McInnes was loved by many people and will be greatly missed.

"It is so seldom that one individual can touch so many lives in such a positive way. Her infectious smile and warm hugs will be missed by all of us," it said.

The statement also said the teen's "heart of gold has been taken away from us in body but not in spirit."

Bradley Wade Rietze, 45 — McInnes' stepfather for 13 years — has been arrested in the slaying and is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday.
