(Facebook)As homicide detectives investigate the death of a 17-year-old girl, students at her southwest highschool are mourning her loss.

Brittney McInnes was found unresponsive in a Canyon Meadows home Monday afternoon and pronounced dead at the scene.

An autoposy performed on Wednesday has confirmed the girl was the victim of homicide.

The flag at Dr. E.P. Scarlett High School was at half-mast on Wednesday.

McInnes was a popular, artistic girl, said student Chelsea Ebanks, who didn't initially want to believe the girl was dead.

"I was in total shock. Like, I thought it was a sick joke. Like, I couldn't believe it happened because … you don't believe it when it happens so close to you."

McInnes worked part-time at a Canyon Meadows Rexall drug store.

"We are very saddened by the news, we send our deepest condolences to the McInnes family," said company spokeswoman Donna Araujo.

A few hours before McInnes was found, police and EMS had been called to the same house in the 800 block of Canaveral Crescent S.W. and paramedics took someone to hospital.

The teenager's body was found later in the afternoon when someone from outside the house called police and asked them to check on the welfare of the girl.
