As Calgarians rally in record numbers to help the people of Haiti recover from last week's devastating earthquake, elementary school students at many schools across the city are emptying their piggy banks to help.

At the Ecole Holy Redeemer Elementary School in Forest Lawn, students raised nearly $100, mostly in coins, for Haiti relief in just two days.

Student Taylor McIntyre donated $15 of her own money. "My parents already gave money and I said mommy I want to give my own money because it's really poor there. In Haiti, they have no food or water," the girl said. "I wanted to make sure the people were OK."

One of McIntyre's classmates, Konrad Stawicki, said he wants to help because Haiti is a very poor country. "They're starting to get more poor and we should help them. We're raising money and praying to God to help them," said the elementary student.

Many of the students at Forest Lawn, in southeast Calgary, rely on subsidized lunches.

School principal, Elizabeth Bennet, has been impressed with what her students, and their parents have been able to raise.

"We said to the students that we thought maybe we would try and do a penny drive … and just asked them to bring in whatever it was that they could," she said

"In the first two days we raised $98 which I thought was really quite tremendous because of the population in this school being fairly high needs we weren't really sure what was going to happen but we were so blessed for having so many generous students," Bennet said.

The money raised at the school will be forwarded to one of the accredited help agencies working in Haiti.
