Bryson Dorey-Fox died as the result of blunt force trauma on Aug. 3, two days after his mother drove him to a local hospital with serious injuries.
Police announced the autopsy results and the charge against Jamie Allen Dorey, 29, of northwest Calgary, on Tuesday morning.
"I only saw him briefly this morning," said Dorey's lawyer Charles Stewart. "He's obviously quite concerned about this. The charges are extremely serious."
Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus released few details during a press conference. Andrus wouldn't say how Bryson was hurt, who was with him at the time or who is now looking after his two older siblings.
"I can't comment on personal information in regards to the family. I can tell you child and family services have been involved in the investigation from the start," he said.
When questioned about the manslaughter charge, Andrus said it was based on the police investigation and consultation with Crown lawyers.
"First-degree involves planning and deliberation, second degree is ... all other homicides not involving planning, and manslaughter is a death as the result of an illegal act," he said.

"These types of investigations tend to strike a chord with our investigators. Some of them have young children of their own."
In an obituary, Bryson was called "Daddy's handsome little man" and the "light of everyone's eyes," including his parents and an older brother and sister.
"We love 'Our Sweet Boy' and he will always [be] in our hearts, till we see him again may his sweet face and smile live within our memories," reads the obituary.
