Two people were taken to a Calgary hospital after a C-Train struck them at a marked intersection at the Heritage station.

The man and woman, believed to be travelling together, were waiting with a group of people for a CP Rail freight train to clear the crossing at about 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, police said.

The pair started to cross after the freight train passed, but were hit by a northbound C-Train.

The barrier arms, lights and sirens — meant for both trains — were activated at the time, said acting Duty Insp. Keith Cain.

The woman, believed to be in her mid-30s, is in critical condition, while the man, believed to be in his mid-40s, suffered minor injuries.

Heritage Drive S.W. was closed at Macleod Trail and Haddon Road for a few hours as police investigated.

Shuttle buses took passengers between Heritage and Chinook stations until C-Train service was restored between the two stops.
