The province is reminding Albertans to make sure their campfires are completely out this long weekend.

According to Sustainable Resource Development, the number of wildfires caused by people's mistakes spikes during holidays.

Since spring, the department has responded to more than 1,200 fires, and about half of those were started by people.

Anastasia Drummond, a wildfire information officer with Sustainable Resource Development, said wildfires can start when campers don't ensure their campfires are completely out.

"A lot of people will go to bed and think it will just smoulder and put itself out overnight, and that's not always the case," Drummond said. "Make sure that it's really extinguished before you're finished with it, especially when you are packing up to leave."

Drummond noted that wildfires can also be started by the hot engines of off-road vehicles.

The fire hazard level across the province currently varies from moderate to high, with a number of open-fire bans in place, although the risk is lower in southern Alberta, where rains have helped.
