Calgary police issued a warning Wednesday about a B.C. man's release from a federal prison.

Norman Eli Larue, a 27-year-old from Kamloops, was released in the Calgary area Wednesday after serving a 5½-year sentence.

"The public is warned that Larue has a history of sexual violence involving the use of a knife. Larue has shown that his danger level may be increased when he is intoxicated by alcohol and/or drugs," police said in a statement.

"The Calgary Police Service is issuing this information and warning after careful deliberation and consideration of all related issues, including privacy concerns, in the belief that it is clearly in the public interest to inform the members of the community of the release of Larue."

Larue has been convicted of five offences, all in Kamloops:

  • Two counts of theft over $5,000, flight from police and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle in 2001.
  • Aggravated sexual assault in 2003.

He is under a 10-year long-term supervision order imposed by the National Parole Board.

Police describe Larue as an aboriginal man, about six-foot-one, weighing 190 pounds.
