A six-year-old girl was killed when the all-terrain vehicle on which she was riding rolled on a gravel road in central Alberta.
The child died at the scene Tuesday afternoon, but the driver of the Polaris Ranger RZR, a female relative under 16, was not injured, Stettler RCMP said.
The vehicle was on a gravel road about 15 kilometres southeast of Stettler, a town east of Red Deer. Both children were from the area and wore seatbelts and full-face helmets, police said.
ATVs are a common piece of farm equipment and are also used by farming families for recreation, said Sgt. Rowland Schmidt.
Schmidt said police weren't releasing the exact age of the girl who was driving.
On Monday night, a 20-year-old man from the Calahoo area northwest of Edmonton also died in an ATV crash.
"The investigation revealed that the male rider was heading south on Range Road 275 when he entered the east ditch. The rider was thrown from the ATV and despite the best efforts of the Parkland Ambulance Service, he was pronounced deceased at the scene," Morinville RCMP said.
The man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, and alcohol may have been a contributing factor, police said.
Alberta has no rules for ATV operation on private land, but on public land, no one under the age of 14 can operate an ATV without adult supervision.
