A man struck by a C-Train near the Calgary Stampede grounds late Friday night is in hospital with life-threatening head injuries.
Police said dozens of people were walking near 25th Avenue at MacLeod Trail S.W. at about 11 p.m. when a train approached. The area was busy, police said, because it's so close to the Stampede's entrance.
Most of the pedestrians stopped when they noticed the train coming, but police said a man walked right past them, directly in front of the train.
The driver honked the horn and immediately began emergency braking, but the train wasn't able to stop in time.
The man, 39, was taken to hospital by the Calgary Emergency Medical Service with life-threatening head injuries. Police said alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident.
Anyone who may have seen the accident is asked to call Const. Keith Peters of the Calgary Police Service traffic section at 403-567-4000.
