A man apparently passing a cellphone to a friend tumbled from an escalator on the Stampede grounds, suffering serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The man was on the second-level escalator in the Grandstand building on Sunday at about midnight when he fell, breaking his pelvis, wrist, ribs and nose, and dislocating a leg.

"The fall is believed to be an accident with no indications of foul play. He was observed by witnesses to be leaning over the escalator side to pass a cellphone to a friend," said police in a release.

The Calgary Stampede, billed "The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth," runs until July 12.

On Friday night, two men released pepper spray near the Bud Big Rig, causing problems for about 50 people in the area. No medical treatment was needed.

Police later stopped a man who matched the description of the suspects and discovered a small canister of dog repellant in his clothing. The man was charged with possessing a prohibited weapon.

Attendance is slightly down at the Stampede since the grounds opened Friday. So far, 382,753 people have gone through the gates, compared to 404,810 at this time last year.
