Access to Calgary Drop-In Centre limited by road work. (CBC) The Calgary Drop-In Centre is concerned that road work in front of the building is keeping volunteers and donors away from the homeless shelter.
Recent road work to improve Riverfront Avenue means the part of 4th Street SE that's in front of the drop-in centre is a gravel pit and people can only drive into the centre from the south.
Louise Gallagher, manager of resource development and public relations, said she's worried the city is isolating the shelter, because people can no longer access it from the north.
She said that is more than just an inconvenience. "It connects us to the greater part of Calgary when we have people going through and passing through and walking by and driving by."
The manager of the road project Chris Ollenberger said the gravel pit is only temporary, and the drop-in centre has been informed several times that a small section of 4th St SE will be diverted.
"As any city evolves, there has to be change, you know … and the drop-in centre hasn't really got their minds around some of the changes they might need to make in telling people to make an additional right-hand turn."
Gallagher said the change in road design is confusing for volunteers and donors, because they don't know the proper route to take.
