The Maritimes' iconic Bay of Fundy is back in the running to win an international natural wonders contest after a bid by Alberta's Dinosaur Provincial Park suddenly became extinct.
The New 7 Wonders of Nature contest announced the Bay of Fundy, which boasts the world's highest tides, is now Canada's entry in the global competition.
Alberta's Dinosaur Provincial Park was disqualified for not meeting contest requirements.
Terri McCulloch, the manager of the Bay of Fundy Tourism Board, said now the bay needs votes to continue to the next stage.
"I think the Bay of Fundy stands a very good chance of getting there," McCulloch said.
"If we can marshal the troops again, Maritimers were just amazing for support and now we have the whole country behind us," McCulloch said.
The second phase of the contest ends July 7. The contest asks people to vote online for their top seven natural wonders.
261 nominees in 2nd phase
On Jan. 7, Dinosaur Provincial Park, Niagara Falls and Lake Superior were selected to compete with more than 200 spectacular places around the world in the second phase of the competition.
The Alberta park narrowly beat out the Bay of Fundy to survive into the second round of the contest.
The Bay of Fundy joins the other two Canadian entrants among the 261 nominees, a list that includes Mount Everest, the Grand Canyon, the Great Barrier Reef and Loch Ness.
The Swiss-based non-profit foundation collected 441 nominations over the internet since it opened the selection process in 2007.
In antiquity, seven buildings and monuments regarded as remarkable came to be known as the seven wonders of the world.
The New 7 Wonders campaign, led by Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber, aims to support, preserve and restore monuments and natural sites.
The competition to choose natural wonders follows an earlier competition to name the world's top man-made wonders.
About 100 million people voted in that competition, which finished in the summer of 2007 with the naming of the winners: the Colosseum, Italy; the Great Wall of China; the Taj Mahal, India; Petra, Jordan; Christ the Redeemer Statue, Brazil; Machu Picchu, Peru; and the Pyramid at Chichen Itza, Mexico.
