The victim was a popular DJ known to friends as Blacka. Calgary's Jamaican community is mourning the loss of a DJ slain following at altercation at a community centre event.
Although police have called the death a homicide, no charges have been laid, and the victim's name has not been released. Friends say the man killed was a popular DJ known in the community as Blacka.
Kevin Lynch, owner of the restaurant Blue Lagoon, said Blacka had a loud voice and a strong presence.
"He's a funny person; he's always talking," Lynch said. "Always happy. Like he's a good guy … Always willing to do anything for anybody.”
Officers were called to a hall run by the Penbrooke Meadows Community Association at about 2:30 a.m. Monday for a "weapons complaint," police said.
"One of the persons involved in the altercation had already left the scene, had been taken to one of the hospitals by a person at that function," Insp. Frank Reuser said. The man, about 25 to 30 years old, died in the hospital from his injuries.
Lynch was outside the hall smoking when the attack happened, ran in and saw Blacka on the floor. Lynch said he doesn't know what motivated the attack but that Blacka was having an argument with another man.
The Jamaican community in Calgary is going to raise money to send Blacka's body back to Jamaica, where he has children, Lynch said.
"He is a big part of the community," he said. "He's one of the main DJs around here. He plays good music. People love him. Now, the kids have to grow up without a dad. It's hard enough."
On Tuesday, investigators urged witnesses to come forward. An estimated 150 people were at the event.
"Over 30 people have been interviewed in relation to this incident; however, police believe there are others who were in attendance who may have more information," police said in a press release.
