A man at the Penbrooke community hall was taken to hospital following an altercation, where he later died. (CBC) Calgary police are investigating after a man died following an altercation at a community centre event.
Officers were called to a hall run by the Penbrooke Meadows Community Association at about 2:30 a.m. Monday for a "weapons complaint," police said.
"One of the persons involved in the altercation had already left the scene, had been taken to one of the hospitals by a person at that function," Insp. Frank Reuser said.
The man, about 25 to 30 years old, died in the hospital from his injuries. Police, who are treating the case as a suspicious death, are not releasing details about what kind of weapon was involved.
"Nobody has been arrested, nobody is in custody. Numerous people at the event were taken in for questioning. At this point, gang unit is not related," Reuser said.
The hall was rented out for a dominoes tournament that was supposed to end at 3 a.m., the southeast community association told CBC News. The person who booked the facility has done so before several times in the past with no problems, a spokesperson added.
Witnesses said the man was a DJ at the event and that he was stabbed, according to some reports.
More information is expected after an autopsy is completed Wednesday.
