The Calgary Roughnecks celebrate their division final win over the San Jose Stealth on May 9. The mayors of Calgary and New York City have agreed to a gut-busting bet on Friday's National Lacrosse League championship final, which features teams from the two mayors' respective cities.
The Calgary Roughnecks face off against the New York Titans on Friday night at the Pengrowth Saddledome for the league's top title.
If the Roughnecks win, New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg will send Calgary Mayor Dave Bronconnier Irish stew and shepherd's pie from Mary's Celtic Kitchen, stuffed grape leaves, moussaka and spinach pie from Pinocchio and an assortment of meats and cheeses from Enzo's in the Bronx.
If the Titans win, Bronconnier will ship Bloomberg a supply of Alberta beef, Italian sausage from Spolumbo's Fine Foods and Deli and beer from Calgary's Big Rock Brewery.
"He's pulling out all the stops to support his team, offering a taste of some of New York's most interesting neighborhoods," said Bronconnier of his mayoral colleague. "I do feel a bit bad, though. I mean it's going to be a lot of work for him to pick up all that stuff for us on Saturday morning."
Bloomberg retorted: "The Titans have been at the top of their game — and that was before Mayor Bronconnier began waving red meat and beer in front of them."
The Roughnecks won the championship in 2004,while the Titans lost in the final game last year against the Buffalo Bandits.
