One person was killed and two were wounded when gunfire erupted between two moving vehicles along a street in southeast Calgary on Tuesday afternoon.

Police have not released the identities of the victims but said the shooting happened on 26th Street S.E. in the community of Dover at 2 p.m. MT.

One vehicle fired at another, causing it to veer off the road and slam through a fence, said police. Both vehicles were heading north near Peigan Trail.

"We do believe that this is gang-related and this is related to the ongoing violence between two groups that have perpetuated the violence in our streets for the last several months," Acting Staff Sgt. Gord Eiriksson told CBC News.

"We've consistently seen when it comes to these gang shootings that there are more than likely one shooter and more than likely one weapon."

One woman, who asked not to be named, said she was getting gas in the area when she heard between five and eight shots.

"I thought it was firecrackers, and then somebody yelled: 'No! Somebody went through the fence. There was a shooting'," she said. "I was just so scared."

The gang unit and homicide detectives are investigating.

"We are rounding up as many witnesses as we possibly can," said Duty Insp. Vic Trickett.

Officers blocked off 26th Street between Peigan Trail and 33rd Avenue. A spokesperson said they also intended to shut down Peigan Trail completely between Barlow Trail and 52nd Street.

'It's intolerable to consider the fact that these gang members think that they can do such brazen acts.'—Acting Staff Sgt. Gord Eiriksson, Calgary Police Service

Police used pylons to mark areas on the road where they found shell casings.

Gulshan Bhala was at the nearby Oliver Green Restaurant and Lounge when the incident occurred.

"There was a car going and another car was going around them, shooting on them," he said. "[A] car went into the backyard, basically."

Eiriksson criticized the shooters' "absolute disregard" for public safety.

"Here's a public street, a busy street, middle of the afternoon, shots being fired. One vehicle careens off and crashes through a fence. Kids could've been playing in the yard. People could've been driving. There could've been a head-on collision and more people could've been hurt or killed," he said.

"So it's intolerable to consider the fact that these gang members think that they can do such brazen acts."

Several suspected gang shootings

There have been several suspected gang shootings in the past few weeks.

A northeast shooting on Jan. 4 left a man in his mid-20s recovering in hospital from gunshot wounds. The shooting likely happened outside a residence in the 800 block of Madiera Drive N.E. just after 8:30 p.m., police said.

On Jan. 6, a suspected gang shooting on the street in the northeast community of Coral Springs sent one man to hospital, police said.

Three people died in a shooting on New Year's Day. Known gang member Sanjeev Mann was gunned down in Bolsa, a Vietnamese restaurant at Macleod Trail and 94th Street S.E., along with Aaron Bendle, whom police called an associate of Mann. A bystander, Keni Su'a, was killed outside the restaurant.

Over the past eight years, more than a dozen gang members have been slain because of the rivalry between two Calgary gangs: Fresh Off the Boat (FOB) and the Fresh Off the Boat Killers (FK).
