KLM Airlines is returning to Calgary, offering non-stop flights to Amsterdam five days a week starting this spring.

The service on the Netherlands-based carrier starts May 3 on an Airbus 330-200, which has 30 seats in business class and 221 seats in economy.

The route was announced during a press conference at the Calgary airport Tuesday morning.

“Under the present economic situation, it’s even more important to choose destinations that meet a strong demand. By introducing Calgary to our network, we further enhance our product offer to our customers, who can now reach this important region in Canada on a direct flight from Amsterdam,” said airline chief executive Peter Hartman in a press release.

All KLM flights between North America and Europe are operated together with Northwest Airlines.

Since 2006, British Airways, Lufthansa and Mexicana Airlines have also started non-stop flights from Calgary. KLM pulled out of Calgary 12 years ago.
