Seven Albertans who perished in a fiery crash on an interstate highway in Colorado have been identified.

The coroner in Larimer County on Friday identified the victims as:

  • Jacob Rempel Sr., 42, of Vauxhall, Alta.
  • Susana Rempel, 40, of Vauxhall, Alta.
  • Jacob Rempel Jr., 16, of Vauxhall, Alta.
  • Susana Rempel, 30, of Willingdon, Alta.
  • Johan Rempel, three, of Willingdon, Alta.
  • Heinrich Rempel, 21 months, of Willingdon, Alta.

The group was travelling in a 1992 grey Chevrolet Suburban on Interstate 25 near Johnstown, about 70 kilometres north of Denver, when it plunged from an overpass, crashed into an embankment and burst into flames early on Thursday, said Colorado state troopers. No one survived.

Colorado state trooper David Hall said identifying the victims was difficult.

"There was a lot of damage involved with the accident and the subsequent fire so it's presented some challenges for investigators to identify the remains and the second thing that makes it difficult is different countries and trying to work with Canadian officials," he told CBC News on Friday.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, he said, but road and weather conditions have been ruled out as factors in the crash.

Vauxhall and Taber are about 250 kilometres southeast of Calgary, while Willingdon is a village in central Alberta, about 100 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.
