A man wearing an RCMP uniform tried to impersonate an officer in a Calgary convenience store, say Calgary police.

On Nov. 1 at about 7:30 a.m., a man dressed in a Mountie uniform asked if he could take several items from the downtown store and return to pay for them later.

When the clerk denied the man's request, he opened a beverage, drank from it, and then left the store on foot, said police on Tuesday.

A preliminary investigation indicates the man is not a member of the RCMP, even though it's believed he was wearing an authentic uniform.

The man is described as Caucasian, about 30 years old, with a heavy build, and balding with short brown hair.

Impersonating a peace officer is a Criminal Code offence that carries a maximum penalty of six months of imprisonment, or a fine of $2,000 or both.

The Calgary police is investigating the case with the RCMP.

Police officers will produce proper identification if questioned, they added.
