A $1-million marijuana seizure earlier this year led Calgary police to the dismantling of three sophisticated grow operations this month and the seizure of another $2 million worth of pot plants.

The Southern Alberta Marijuana Investigative Team (SAMIT) executed search warrants on three properties in north Calgary on Aug. 13, police said on Tuesday.

The operation stemmed from the seizure of 850 plants worth about $1 million on Jan. 31 from a home on Evansmeade Common N.W., where electrical and water bypasses were found in the basement for the grow-op.

The first subsequent seizure on Aug. 13 was made in the 4600 block of Maryvale Road N.E. where police found 591 plants worth about $739,000 in a grow operation. One man who was home at the time was arrested.

About two hours later, SAMIT members and Calgary police tactical officers searched a basement in the 100 block of Bermondsey Road N.W., seizing 939 plants worth about $1.2 million.

Just before midnight that day, police executed a search warrant at a home in the 7000 block of Temple Drive N.E., where they found a small amount of marijuana, grow-op equipment, wiring, and high-intensity light bulbs. Two people were arrested at the scene.

A 33-year-old Calgary man has been charged with four counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, three counts of production of a controlled substance, three counts of theft of electricity and water, and one count of proceeds of crime.

A Calgary man and woman, both in their 60s, were each charged with one count of possession for the purpose of trafficking.
