The RCMP and Canadian border officials have seized counterfeit luxury purses, wallets and jewelry worth millions of dollars from three locations in Calgary.

The seizures began on July 28 with 1,600 items from a northeast Calgary business, followed by 6,400 items confiscated from a 12-metre container on Aug. 20 that had just arrived in the city from Vancouver. The next day, 700 more items were seized from a Calgary home.

The counterfeit goods, imported from China, included purses, ball caps, jewelry, wallets, T-shirts and belts falsely labelled with brand names Prada, Versace, Gucci, Burberry and D&G, officials said Monday.

The total seizure of about 7,200 items comes from a year-long investigation, said investigators from the Calgary RCMP federal enforcement section and the Canadian Border Services Agency.

"If these goodies were real luxury-brand items, they'd be worth more than $5 million on the street," said Calgary RCMP Cpl. Sharon Franks. She said similar counterfeit items were priced to sell at $80 to $100 in the city.

Charges, which could include offences under the Copyright Act and the Criminal Code, are pending, said officials. The maximum penalty under the Copyright Act is a $1-million fine and/or five years in jail.

If there is a conviction, the goods will be destroyed, said Franks.

"Fake luxury items are not a good deal for everyone involved," said the RCMP in a news release. "The products are often made in unfavourable working conditions in developing countries, and sometimes involve child labour."

The RCMP said it conducts about 400 investigations into intellectual property crime every year.
