Calgarians are being encouraged to line the city's streets to form a "Route of Valour" on Friday to honour the latest soldier killed in Afghanistan.

The route follows the recessional route for Cpl. Michael Starker, from the funeral at the Roundup Centre in Stampede Park to City Hall.

A former Calgary paramedic, Starker, 36, was ambushed and killed on May 6 while on foot patrol in the Pashmul region, outside Kandahar City. He had been providing medical assistance to fellow soldiers in Afghanistan since December as a reservist with the Alberta-based 15 Field Ambulance, his second tour of duty there.

The public funeral service will begin Friday at 2 p.m. MT and is expected to last at least an hour and a half. The city said it will be both a full Catholic mass and a full honours military funeral.

Following the service, at roughly 3:30 p.m., a City of Calgary ambulance will transport Starker's body to City Hall via 11th Avenue and Macleod Trail North.

More than 600 representatives from the Canadian Forces, Emergency Medical Services, Calgary police, Calgary fire department and other emergency services are expected to participate.

EMS said it hopes to distribute hand-held Canadian flags to supporters but also encourages people to bring their own.

Following the recessional, close friends and family will attend a private internment at Queen's Park Cemetery.

Starker was the 83rd Canadian soldier and fourth Calgarian killed in Afghanistan since the mission began in 2002.
