Hundreds of Calgary paramedics shared their memories and tributes in a book Saturday for the family of Cpl. Michael Starker, killed in Afghanistan this week.

Starker, a Calgary paramedic and reservist who had volunteered for his second tour of duty in Afghanistan, was on foot patrol Tuesday in the Pashmul region when he was ambushed and killed. Another Canadian soldier was wounded in the attack, but is expected to recover.

Starker's colleagues gathered at the regimental office of his unit, 15 Field Ambulance, to sign a book of condolences on Saturday that will be given to the medic's family.

The public can also sign a book of condolences in the atrium of Calgary's city hall.

Starker's family asked that donations in his memory be made to the Poppy Fund in honour of his military contributions or to the Samaritan's Purse Shoebox Program for his work with the Calgary Emergency Medical Services.

They also released photos of Starker to the media on Friday, including ones of him working as a medic in Afghanistan and enjoying a vacation.

The fallen soldier returned to Canada on Friday on a military plane that landed at Canadian Forces Base Trenton in eastern Ontario. His wife, Nicole, and other family were on the tarmac for the repatriation ceremony.

A public funeral is being planned for Calgary, but the time and location have not yet been released.

Starker was the 83rd Canadian soldier and fourth Calgarian killed in Afghanistan since the mission began in 2002.
