Calgarians were bracing for more snow Thursday as forecasters predicted up to 25 centimetres would be dumped on the area.

Environment Canada said snowfall warnings were in effect for the Calgary region, with most snow expected in the evening.

In Calgary, the snow was expected to mix with rain for a total of 10 to 15 centimetres, ending overnight. Forecasters warned the snow at times would be heavy.

Areas west of the city were forecast to be the hardest hit, receiving between 10 and 25 centimetres.

In Grande Cache, where more than 10 centimetres were expected by evening, RCMP had already closed Highway 40 from Highway 16.

In a statement, the police said heavy snowfall on Wednesday caused numerous tractor-trailer units to spin out, stranding other motorists along the highway and in the ditch.

Police said continued snowfall and the stranded vehicles hampered snow-removal efforts, forcing them to close the route.

  • Bow Valley
  • Calgary
  • Canada Olympic Park
  • Canmore
  • Claresholm
  • Cochrane
