Darren Coupal, 36, was charged Thursday with one count each of impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.
A group of friends and family were out for a walk on Bridleridge Way S.W. on Wednesday evening, when an SUV jumped a grass median and barrelled into them, said police. Witnesses said the vehicle then zigzagged across the median, hitting a tree, and sped away.
A 39-year-old woman died at the scene. Her 15-year-old son and a 30-year-old family friend are in hospital with serious injuries.

Sean Colville said his daughters, who were playing soccer in the backyard, heard tires popping and then screaming, so they rushed inside to tell him.
"I'm just pleased with my girls. They're 13 and 11 and they didn't just stand there," he said. "They were in front of the house calling me in seconds and from that point I just said let's go find him."
He said they all jumped into their car and followed the damaged SUV to a nearby house where they then called police.
"I look through the fence and I could see him standing there," Colville said. "He stood there stone cold for 10 minutes."
Coupal, who remains in custody, was also charged with two counts each of impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and failure to remain at the scene of an accident causing bodily harm.
The remaining three charges are refusal to provide a breath sample, driving with a suspended licence and driving an uninsured vehicle.
