A Conservative candidate defeated in last week's provincial election made serious allegations of voting irregularities in a Calgary courtroom Tuesday.

Shiraz Shariff made an application in the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench to get copies of the voter lists, ballots and documents for people who were sworn in at the polling stations in Calgary-McCall.

He claimed in an affidavit that people living outside the riding, non-Canadian citizens, and people using false identities were all allowed to cast ballots, especially during the advance polls.

Shariff, who served four terms as a Tory MLA, lost to Liberal opponent Darshan Kang by 118 votes in the March 3 election.

Dale Galbraith, president of the Progressive Conservative association in Calgary-McCall, said they are not accusing Kang of any wrongdoing, and that they only want the allegations of irregularities to be investigated.

The judge turned down Shariff's request Tuesday and told him he will have to wait until after the official documents are published by Elections Alberta in mid-April.

According to Elections Alberta, about 2,100 people turned out to vote in the riding's advance polls, almost double the advance turnout in the 2004 provincial election.

Alberta Liberal officials said they are not aware of any voting irregularities in the riding.
