Ethan, Ava top list of Alberta baby names again

A record-breaking 48,589 babies were born in Alberta last year with more than a few named Ethan and Ava among them.
The 24,748 boys and 23,841 girls born in the booming province in 2007 broke a record of 45,465 births set in 1983, the province said Monday.

For the seventh year in a row, Ethan was the most popular name for boys, chosen by 373 families, while Ava topped the girls' list for the second year running, favoured by 246 parents.
Some of the more distinct names to come across Alberta's vital statistics branch in 2007 include Unique, Whisper and Raynebow-Roze for girls, and Ocean, Midnite and Obsidian-Angel for boys.
There were more than 10,000 distinct names recorded last year, from Aad and Aallishia to Zymel and Zyren, which reflects Alberta's growing diversity, provincial officials said.
Geography continued to be popular with parents as they named their boys Milwaukee and Cyprus or their girls Nevada, Venice and Alberta.
